You don’t have to live with acne forever

Acne is a problem for many people, from puberty right through adulthood. It can make the sufferer self-conscious and it often leads to permanent scarring. Causes of acne are varied, and can include hormones, high stress levels and diet. Basically, it’s simply a blocked pore that has bacteria within the sebaceous gland. The clogged pore then becomes swollen, which turns into acne[1].

Treatments available

Treating your acne isn’t as easy as just washing your face more. There are underlying causes and things that predispose people to acne. Drug treatments are available, but they can be expensive and have worrying side effects. Isotretinoin, a commonly prescribed acne treatment, can cause sterility and severe birth defects. The antibiotic clindamycin can cause stomach upsets and red, dry, peeling skin.

Natural acne treatments

A study at Otago University found that New Zealand manuka oil showed antibacterial activity against all the types of bacteria that are associated with acne. This was even at very low concentrations of 0.03% of manuka oil. Waikato University then conducted studies on active manuka honey, which showed that too had antibacterial qualities.

Turmeric oil is a traditional acne treatment, known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial qualities. It also contains antioxidants that counter free radicals, which can age and damage your skin. Sunflower seed oil, which is rich in vitamin E, important for skin repair and scar minimisation. Beeswax, castor seed oil, cocoa butter, shea butter and calendula flower oil all promote moisture and skin regeneration for healthy, glowing skin.
