There are a number of reasons why you might want to stop using commercial moisturisers and cleansers. The ‘no poo’ method aims to use naturally-available alternatives to avoid exposure to chemicals commonly found in commercial shampoos and conditioners. If you suffer from eczema, psoriasis or sensitive skin, you may react to a number of irritants in common moisturisers. Whatever the reason, it’s simple to find great, effective and natural replacements.
Basic moisturiser recipe
The current darling of the natural food and beauty movement, coconut oil is a very versatile product. It’s an excellent carrier for essential oils, and it is a light moisturizer that soaks into the skin quickly. Coconut oil is high in fatty acids that help with skin regeneration. However, you need to be aware that it’s comedogenic, meaning it can block pores and so may not be good for acne-prone skins.
Shea butter has vitamins A, E, and F, to help with healing. It also contains fatty acids that assist new skin growth. Shea butter is the perfect as a starting point for a moisturizer.
Whip ¼ cup of coconut oil and ¼ cup of shea butter together in your kitchen mixer. This creates a moisturiser than provides gentle moisturising without irritating inflamed skin. It looks good enough to eat, and you could (although not recommended)! For scent, you can add a few drops of an essential oil as required. See below for inspiration.

Sunflower seed oil
Rich in vitamin E, sunflower seed oil is great for healing and regenerating skin.
This ‘oil’ is actually a wax from an American shrub. Used by indigenous American tribes, this non-comedogenic oil is high in vitamin A and E. It also has fatty acids, vitamin B complex, silicon and zinc, all of which make it super for skin.
Another super-oil, argan contains vitamin E, squalene, fatty acids and carotenes. Extracted from the nut of the argan tree of Morocco, it’s excellent for wound healing and helps to nourish skin. It also reduces sebum levels in oily skin, helping to prevent breakouts.
